The San Luis Obispo company will take over the former 84 Lumber site that will provide room to expand, its CEO says.

Meathead Movers, San Luis Obispo County’s largest moving company, is in escrow to buy the 84 Lumber property at 3600 S. Higuera St.

The escrow should close within 45 days, Meathead Chief Executive Officer and President Aaron Steed said. He made the announcement at last week’s San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce breakfast.

The former 84 Lumber property has six acres and a 17,500-square-foot building that will give the company room to expand, Steed said.

Founded in 1997, Meathead Movers now has two locations, one at 144 Hind Lane in San Luis Obispo and another in Camarillo. The company employs 150 people, including 90 in San Luis Obispo. A Tribune report in 2007 said the company conducts more than 2,000 moves and earns revenue of more than $2 million a year.

The 84 Lumber property has been vacant since the Pennsylvania-based company closed its San Luis Obispo location in 2006. The company blamed a historic low of housing starts for the closure. It continues to operate 368 stores across the country, according to its Web site.
