A moving company that began 15 years ago as a side job by a pair of brothers in high school that grew to employ 150 people has been named the Small Business of the Year by a local legislator.

Central Coast state Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian, R-San Luis Obispo, himself a small businessman, has bestowed the honor on Meathead Movers and Aaron and Evan Steed, who founded it in 1997.

Achadjian designated Meathead Movers the 33rd Assembly District Small Business of the Year.

“Meathead Movers is a prime example of how hard work and dedication lead to success,” Achadjian wrote in a news release.

“Despite this impressive growth,” Achadjian added, “the Steed brothers have stayed true to their original commitment of providing outstanding service to their customers and much needed job opportunities to athletes.”

In addition to building a successful business, he added, the Steeds “have been an active force within the community, helping women and children who have been victims of domestic violence.”

Meathead Movers, Achadjian said, helps abused women by working with women’s shelters to provide free moving services to victims of domestic violence.

The brothers established their business as a way of earning money while fulfilling their commitments as athletes. They soon were enlisting the help of other athletes to keep up with demand.

The brothers adopted the named Meathead Movers as an ironic rebuke to the stereotype of the “dumb jock” moving furniture.

The company now provides moving services from northern San Luis Obispo County to southern Orange County. Its employees are mostly athletes.

Since 2004, the company has sponsored Meathead Wrestling, a nonprofit organization that promotes and encourages the sport of amateur wrestling to all ages at every level.
