Meathead Movers: Why We Built a Moving Company Around Athletes

author avatar Written by Aaron Steed

When I started Meathead Movers at 17 years old, I was a wrestler at San Luis Obispo High School. I later wrestled in college, trained and competed in mixed martial arts, and today I compete in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.  Sports have shaped who I am. It’s no surprise they also shaped the company we built, too.

Very early on, it became obvious that moving furniture is incredibly demanding work. Our job description is literally to move heavy objects up and down stairs, safely and efficiently. Then we added our own twist: jogging whenever we’re not carrying something, all while maintaining a positive, enthusiastic attitude.

To me, it was obvious that athletes would thrive in this environment.

Athlete Movers Don’t Just Tolerate Hard Work, They Seek It

Most people try to avoid physically demanding work. Athletes voluntarily seek it out.  They’re already waking up early to train, pushing themselves through difficult workouts, competing, and constantly trying to improve. They understand discipline because they’ve practiced it long before they ever apply for a job.

Instead of paying hundreds of dollars each month for a gym membership or personal trainer, our athletes get paid to stay active while helping families through one of the most stressful days of their lives.  That’s a win for everyone. But wanting hard work is only the starting point. What athletes do with that work ethic is where it really matters.

Safety Starts With Preparation

Moving is physical, and physical work demands preparation. That’s why safety has always been one of our highest priorities.  Our team generally understands body mechanics, proper lifting techniques, recovery, and injury prevention because they’ve spent years training their bodies for competition. They know the importance of warming up, communicating with teammates, and recognizing when something doesn’t feel right.

They also tend to be remarkably resilient. Every athlete has dealt with bumps, bruises, setbacks, and challenges. They’ve learned how to recover, adapt, and keep improving.  That mindset serves our customers well.

Moving Is the Ultimate Team Sport

People often think moving is about strength. It’s really about teamwork.  No successful move happens because of one person. Every day requires communication, planning, adaptability, trust, and problem-solving. Every team member has to know their role while constantly helping one another succeed.  Our employees often joke that Meathead Movers is its own sport. In many ways, they’re right.

Every move presents new obstacles, different homes, unique furniture, changing weather, unexpected challenges, and customers counting on us to make their day easier.  Success depends on working together. That’s exactly what athletes spend their lives learning to do, and it shows up the moment they walk through a customer’s front door.

The Character Behind the Strength

Strength is only part of what makes athletes exceptional movers. Character matters just as much, arguably more.  Many develop discipline, accountability, resilience, humility, and respect through years of coaching and competition. They understand preparation. They know how to work through adversity. They know what it means to represent something bigger than themselves.

Those qualities matter inside our customers’ homes. Over the years, one of the greatest compliments we’ve received is hearing customers say:  “I felt comfortable having your movers around my family, my home, and my valuables.”  Trust isn’t something you can advertise. It’s something you earn through thousands of interactions.

A Shared Mindset With Our Clients

That trust runs deeper than good manners, though. Many of our clients are high achievers themselves. They’ve built businesses. They’ve advanced in demanding careers. They’ve overcome challenges. They’ve pursued ambitious goals.

There’s often an unspoken connection between people who are striving toward something meaningful. Our team understands that mindset because they’ve lived it,  they know what it’s like to chase improvement every day, even when no one is watching.

I believe our clients recognize that drive when they see it in our team. It’s more than physical fitness. It’s a shared commitment to excellence.

Athletes Love Feedback

One of my favorite things about working with athletes is that they want to know how they’re doing. They don’t shy away from feedback, they crave it.  Competition teaches people that measurement leads to improvement. That’s why we track so many aspects of our business: customer satisfaction, breakage rates, on-time performance, and online reviews.  We celebrate wins, recognize improvement, and create friendly competition across our teams because that’s how athletes naturally grow.  The scoreboard isn’t there to create pressure. It’s there to inspire excellence.

More Than Movers

Hiring athletes has never been about creating a gimmick. It’s about building a culture: one built on discipline, teamwork, and resilience. A culture where people enjoy working hard, helping others, and constantly improving themselves. It’s who we are.

Some of our athletes go on to become teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, firefighters, military officers, business leaders, and parents. While they may not spend their entire careers moving furniture, we hope the lessons they learn here stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Why Athletes?

After nearly three decades, people still ask why we built a moving company around athletes.  My answer has never changed: athletes bring energy, discipline, and resilience, and they genuinely enjoy working hard.  To me, it has always been obvious. Athlete movers create a better moving experience.  After nearly 30 years, I believe we’ve proven it.
