It was a huge weekend for my brother, Team Meathead and I, and though visiting New York City was an awesome experience, it’s good to be back home on the Central Coast.

I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to the Big Apple, where Meathead Movers was honored at the United Nations building as one of the “top 100 companies” in the U.S. started by young entrepreneurs, age 35 and under. My brother and I founded our company in 1997, when I was a high school junior and Evan was just a freshman.

We were one of only two companies in the logistics and transportation industry nationwide to receive the honor as part of the 2013 Empact Showcase, which was sponsored by Entrepreneur Magazine.

I was thrilled and especially humbled to have all of our hard work be recognized on an national level and I am grateful to all our tremendous employees and communities we serve for accepting Meathead Movers and allowing us to flourish.

It was also an honor to receive an award from a business icon like Jeff Hoffman (founder of Priceline.com) in the U.N. chamber where world leaders address and confront some of the world’s most pressing issues. I also appreciate the U.N. partnering with Empact to recognizing entrepreneurship in America and around the world.

The Foundation recognizes that entrepreneurial minds and can-do attitudes are critical to solving some of the world’s most complex problems. Additionally, I was able to meet and befriend many other young entrepreneurs who are disrupting their respective industry and going “all-in” towards their dream. One of the most memorable moments of the trip was when a group of eight honorees formed around a table and we were asked to chart out a timeline of our life from the time we were kids to today and list our biggest failures/set-backs and successes. What shocked me was how most of us came from broken homes and were rebellious at times- some crazy stories were shared... Also, most of the group had dealt with major setbacks in their relatively young lives including divorce, bankruptcy, major rejections, embarrassment and self-doubt. What we also had in common was our willingness to try again and to seek something more virtuous than just money. I believe that everyone who sat and shared at my table felt a sense of responsibility and humility for what their professional life’s effort stands for; mine is:

  1. To create the perfect job for the student athlete
  2. To help those in need and
  3. To provide the safest and most ethical moving solution- dang, I love saying that!480.jpg

I was fortunate enough to represent my community and staff at this memorable event, all I can say is I'm truly honored, humbled and even more motivated to grow our company and continue to change our industry.

This trip was also special because it marks my five-year wedding anniversary and it's definitely exciting to celebrate that in the Big Apple! When we got to the hotel there was champagne waiting for us from our hotel and my brother.

My wife and I were excited to take a few days to explore the city which we've never been to, together, and to reflect on how blessed we are to have each other and a successful growing business. We also received a tour of the U.N. with the group and the historical value and international scope is incredibly fascinating..

Below is a breakdown of the different industries that were recognized at the Empact Showcase 2013:
